Cool Neighbourhoods | Calculation and Planning

Cool Neighbourhoods is a project about creating a digital twin about heatstress for the municipality of Middelburg and, as an end goal, the full province of Zeeland. A project group and two graduation interns have already built a product that can generate and visualise the generated map. Currently everything is being run locally on personal devices, for one user at a time, with a lot of data needed for the final result. This assignment will be about working on the core features of the project and expanding the planning features.

Level: Internship/Graduation, software engineering. One student.

Things you can or will be working on (roughly in order of priority):

  • Adding an Urban Heat Island map. This has been requested a few times. A new generation pipeline needs to be established for this.
  • Bringing in live sensor data. We want to feed our sensor data into the calculation. This will be the first step into actual real time measurements.
  • Costs and planning. This is where most building needs to happen. The idea behind this is, is that policy makers need to know what the estimated costs are for a neighborhood and make comparisons between different plans.
  • Where do we store placed objects? At the moment they are stored in the local storage of the browser. We are not sure if that is the best option for future development.
  • In general making the UI cleaner and easier to use.

How you approach this project is largely up to you. You will be working closely with another student on this project, with some overlap in the areas that you will be working on.
